Thunder Win One Gold and Set School-Record on First Day of MIAA Meet

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Trine women's track and field team notched one first-place finish and set a school record on day one of MIAA Field Day, held Thursday at Calvin College.

A sweep of the top three spots of the hammer throw highlighted the team's efforts on the day. Kara Eck (Auburn, Ind. / DeKalb) won her third consecutive conference title with a toss of 57.02 meters (187 feet, 1 inch). She was followed by Jenn Steyer (Fenton, Mich. / Lake Fenton) with a throw of 48.41 meters (158 feet, 10 inches). Andrea Hagar (Goshen, Ind. / Fairfield) rounded out the top three at a distance of 43.43 meters (142 feet, 6 inches). The finish continues Trine's run of dominance in the event at the conference meet. Eck and Steyer have taken the top two spots in the conference three years in a row.

Hagar also scored in the discus, finishing in second with a toss of 38.41 meters (126 feet). Eck added a seventh-place finish in the discus.

Rebecca Flora (Greenfield, Ind. / Greenfield Central) highlighted the performance of Thunder runners in preliminaries as she set a new school record in the 400-meter dash. Flora crossed the finish line in 58.66 seconds to notch the best qualifying time in the event. Jensyn Garrow (Archbold, Ohio / Archbold) qualified third with a time of 5.55 seconds.

Kaylyn Forrest (Cassopolis, Mich. / Ross-Beatty) ran the best preliminary time in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.24 seconds. Forrest will also sore in the 100-meter dash after running the fifth-best qualifying time.

Today's performances leave Trine in third place with 34 points. The Thunder sit just 1.5 points behind Hope for second. Calvin is in first place with 62 points.

MIAA Field Day concludes tomorrow. Events are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
