ANGOLA, IND. -- The Trine University women's lacrosse team played tough but came up short against Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) regular season champion Calvin College by the score of 16-7.
Trine came out strong with senior Rebecca Plantz (DeWitt, Mich. / DeWitt) causing an early turnover and setting up a free position goal for junior Kierston Osowski (Granger, Ind. / Elkhart Memorial) for the early 1-0 lead.
Calvin got their offense rolling in response and scored the next seven goals to take the 7-1 lead which they would not relinquish for the rest of the game. Despite the trailing the rest of the contest the Thunder would not go away scoring six more goals to hold off a running clock for most of the game.
The Thunder came away with four goals total to enter the intermission trailing by 9-4. In the second half, Trine would add three goals while Calvin would add seven for the final score of 16-7.
Plantz finished the game with a team-high four points including three goals and one assist. With the goals, she raises her season total to 40 and becomes the Trine women's lacrosse record holder for most goals in a single season.
Osowski was the only other player to finish the game with multiple points recording a goal and an assist in the contest. Senior Samantha Ihrie (Kendallville, Ind. / East Noble), sophomore Lilly Dusek (Zionsville, Ind. / Zionsville), and sophomore Renee Bock (New Haven, Ind. / New Haven) each added a goal for the Thunder.
Junior Audrey Poteet (Indianapolis, Ind. / Ben Davis) got the start in net for the Thunder and made some spectacular saves despite allowing the 16 goals. She finished the contest with 19 saves and nine groundballs.
Trine falls to 5-10 overall and 3-4 in the MIAA. They fall to fifth in the standings but remain in contention for the fourth seed in the MIAA Tournament. A victory over Hope College in their final regular-season contest would vault them into fourth place and advance them to the tournament. The Thunder will decide their fate on Saturday, April 28 at 1 p.m. The game is also senior day.
