Women's Lacrosse Defeat Alma

ALMA, MICH. – The Trine University women's lacrosse team came away with crucial Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) victory over host Alma College by the score of 17-15.

Both teams would trade goals throughout the first half of the contest and with the Thunder coming away with a slight advantage, taking a 7-6 lead into the intermission.

The Scots came out with two quick goals in the second half to pull ahead 8-7. Trine responded with three straight goals of their own to take back the lead 10-8. They would not relinquish it again.

Another three goal streak spanning six minutes starting with eight minutes remaining in the game put the game out of reach as Trine took a 17-12 lead, their largest of the game. The Scots made it interesting scoring three goals in the final two minutes, but the Thunder defense did just enough to come away with the 17-15 victory.

Freshman Kristin John (South Bend, Ind. / St. Joe's) went off offensively, leading the way with five goals and two assists, the second time this season that she has recorded seven points in a single game. Junior Kiersten Osowski (Granger, Ind. / Elkhart Memorial) added four points of her own including three goals and one assist, her second four-point game of the season.

Seniors Rebecca Plantz (DeWitt, Mich. / DeWitt) and Samantha Ihrie (Kendallville, Ind. / East Noble) both came away with three goals as well. Plantz added to her stat sheet with a defensive effort recording a season high nine groundballs.

In goal, junior Audrey Poteet (Indianapolis, Ind. / Ben Davis) played the whole game and came away with 13 saves.

The Thunder improve to 5-9 overall and 3-3 in the MIAA. The win keeps Trine in a tie for fourth in the conference and in a position to earn a conference tournament berth.

Trine will take the field again when they host Calvin College on Wednesday, April 25 for a 6 p.m. contest.
