ANGOLA, IND. -- The Trine University men's golf team hosted the annual Ken Venturi Invitational at Zollner Golf Course in Angola, Ind.
Although the invitational consisted of 18 holes, the format consisted of three sets of two-man teams per school competing. Holes one through six were played as a scramble, holes seven through 12 were played in a better ball format and holes 13 through 18 were an alternate shot format.
Trine had four teams competing with the highest finish posted by "Blue" team that had a total of 197 strokes and placed second overall. The duo of seniors Nick Knowlton (Bridgman, Mich./Bridgman) and Joe LeSuer (Northfield Center, Ohio/Trinity) led the group of six individuals with an 18-hole total of 64 strokes. Seniors Grant Brettnacher (Lafayette, Ind./Harrison) and Todd Mieske (Owosso, Mich./Owosso) were second with 65 strokes and the pair consisting of junior Cameron Ruge (Coldwater, Mich./Coldwater) and Carlos Coeto (Barnardo, Mexico) rounded out the team with a total of 68 strokes.
The Trine "White" team was next and placed fourth overall with a grand total of 206 strokes. Sophomore Jeffrey Uhls (Shelbyville, Ind./Shelbyville) and junior Zach Frane (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) led the group with a round of 66 strokes. The remaining two-man pairs both shot rounds of 70 strokes and were made up of freshmen Mitch Lowney (Fenton, Mich./Clarkston Everest) and Sean Hogan (Goshen, Ind./Northwood) along with sophomore Jacob Black (Defiance, Ohio/Defiance) and freshman Travis Mersing (Swanton, Ohio/Evergreen).
Freshman Brian Titus (LaGrange, Ind./Westview) and senior Keegan Dwyer (Coldwater, Mich./Coldwater) led the Trine "Gold" team with a score of 71 strokes. Freshmen Nick Phillips (Yorktown, Ind./Muncie Central) and Eric Parker (Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon) had the second-lowest total at 73 strokes. Freshmen Chase Butler (Bourbon, Ind./Trinity) and Jacob Roeder (Mishawaka, Ind./Mishawaka) rounded out the team and fired a score of 74 strokes. Overall, the group finished the event with a score of 218 total strokes which put them in sixth place.
Finally, the six-man team of freshman Dillon Drake (Syracuse, Ind./Wawasee), junior Derek Jordan (Fort Wayne, Ind./Northrop), sophomores Justin Glessner (Shelbyville, Ind./Shelbyville), Bryce Cunningham (Kokomo, Ind./Northwestern), freshman Ray Newton (Fort Wayne, Ind./New Knoxville) and sophomore Thomas Stoner (Gosport, Ind./Owen Valley) combined to post an overall score of 237 strokes to finish eighth. Drake and Jordan ended the day with a total of 74 strokes to lead the group. The pair of Glessner and Cunningham were second at 78 strokes and Newton and Stoner combined to fire a round of 85 strokes to end the scoring.
Trine will compete in its first Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association event of the season on Monday, Sept. 9 when the Thunder travel to Holland, Mich. for the MIAA Jamboree #1 hosted by Hope College. The round is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. at Wuskowhan Country Club in Forest Hills, Mich.
