BATTLE CREEK, MICH. -- The Trine University men's golf team got the 2018 fall season underway with the completion of the first round of the O.C. Lou Collins Memorial Tournament hosted by Olivet College at Bedford Valley Country Club in Battle Creek, Mich.
The Thunder posted a team score of 299 strokes on day one to place third of 14 schools. Hope (Mich.) College leads the team standings with a first-round total of 287 strokes and Allegheny (Pa.) College is second with 298 strokes.
Individually for Trine, four of the five individual scores that are eligible for the overall team score were in the 70's with the duo of juniors Grant Brettnacher (Lafayette, Ind./Harrison) and Nick Knowlton (Bridgman, Mich./Bridgman) both shooting a one-over par round of 73 strokes. Both players are also tied for eighth overall. Junior Todd Mieske (Owosso, Mich./Owosso) carded a round of 75 strokes to place third on the team and in a tie for 16th in the field of 83 players.
Sophomore Cameron Ruge (Coldwater, Mich./Coldwater) had the fourth lowest score for the Thunder of 78 strokes and junior Joe LeSueur (Northfield Center, Ohio/Trinity) rounded out the individual team scores with 81 strokes.
Also competing for Trine as an individual was sophomore Carlos Coeto (Bernardo, Mexico) who shot an even par score of 72 strokes and is tied for fourth overall.
The men's golf team will wrap-up the two-day event tomorrow (Saturday, Sept. 1) with the final round starting at 9 a.m. at Bedford Valley Country Club.
