ANGOLA, IND. -- The Trine ACHA D2 men's hockey team defeated the University of Akron 14-0 in their home opener.
Trine's first goal of the night came from forward Alex Johanson with assists from Hunter Lagrone and Ellis Freatman. Just 12 seconds later the Thunder would add their second goal to the board when Braeden Pearl scored unassisted. Trine would lead 6-0 after the first period and 11-0 after two periods on their way to the 14-0 period.
Both Pearl and fellow forward Carmine Taffo would notch hat tricks in the game. Pearl also added an assist. Johanson would finish the night with two goals and two assists, tied with Pearl for most points in the game with four.
Three goalies saw time in the net for Trine, each keeping Akron off the board during their shift. Adam Conkling, the only net-minder to see time in both of Trine's first two games, would start the game playing the entire first period. Tyler Hough would take care of the second period and Brett Young would finish off the third.
The Thunder will face off with the Zips again tomorrow, Sept. 23, at 7:00 p.m.
